According to ABC News, a significant industrial accident has occurred at Smitty’s Supply Inc., a lubricant manufacturing facility in Roseland, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. The resulting ongoing fire has prompted widespread evacuation efforts. Dudley DeBosier is monitoring this developing situation and stands with the affected community during this challenging time.
Incident Overview
The explosion occurred on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Smitty’s Supply plant, which manufactures and distributes lubricants including motor oils. The facility employs approximately 400 workers. Following the explosion, a large plume of smoke became visible, and authorities immediately ordered a mandatory evacuation for all residents within a one-mile radius of the facility.
Approximately 800 residents have been affected by the evacuation order, with 42 people staying at emergency shelters as of Saturday.
Response Efforts
Personnel from various levels of government and contracted support are involved in field operations. Response crews are working to remove structural debris, address hotspots, and establish containment berms around the site.
Continuous air quality monitoring is being conducted, with officials reporting that all readings have shown either non-detectable levels or measurements well below health-based thresholds, as of Saturday. However, residents have been advised to avoid direct contact with soot from the fire, as it’s believed to contain combustibles and hydrocarbon chemicals.
Environmental response efforts are addressing potential impacts to the nearby Tangipahoa River and adjacent waterways. Officials have confirmed debris presence in the river and are collecting water samples for environmental impact analysis.
According to WAFB, the EPA has taken over as the lead agency coordinating response efforts, stepping in at the State of Louisiana’s request. Previously, Smitty’s Supply had been coordinating the response. Currently, 18 EPA employees and contractors are engaged in the response, with 10 stationed directly at the site. This number is expected to increase in coming days.
