Gadolinium Toxicity Lawyers

The chemical element gadolinium is used in various intravenous dyes to help doctors and lab technicians capture more accurate results during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) procedures. Clearer images allow better detection of infection, internal bleeding, diseases such as cancer, and other abnormalities in a patient’s soft tissues, veins, and organs. Unfortunately, these gadolinium-based dyes have been linked to gadolinium deposition disease or toxicity, a serious complication that may cause patients to experience a variety of symptoms and side effects, such as:

  • Brain fog
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Memory impairment
  • Burning sensation of the skin within hours or days of the procedure
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Central nervous system problems
  • Skin discoloration, thickening, or pain
  • Decreased mobility

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with gadolinium deposition disease or toxicity, or if you experienced at least one of these symptoms within 60 days of receiving a contrast dye injection for an MRI or MRA, the attorneys at Dudley DeBosier are ready to fight for you. Our attorneys have years of experience helping people injured by dangerous products, and we’re ready to help you get the compensation you deserve. How Does Gadolinium Deposition Disease Occur?

After a contrast dye injection, gadolinium is supposed to be filtered through the kidneys and completely eliminated from a patient’s body through their urine within a few days. However, recent research shows that significant amounts of gadolinium may remain in patients’ bodies for longer periods of time. When gadolinium isn’t filtered properly, it builds up in a patient’s brain and other organs, causing severe side effects. This is known as gadolinium deposition disease.

FDA Issues Drug Safety Communication on Gadolinium-Based Dyes

In response to these recent findings, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Drug Safety Communication requiring new warning labels on the following gadolinium-based contrast agents in December 2017:

  • Dotarem® (gadoterate meglumine)
  • Eovist® (gadoxetate disodium)
  • Gadavist® (gadobutrol)
  • Magnevist® (gadopentetate dimeglumine)
  • MultiHance® (gadobenate dimeglumine)
  • Omniscan (gadodiamide)
  • Optimark® (gadoversetamide)
  • ProHance® (gadoteridol)
