Tainted building materials used to maximize profits
The Associated Press reported more than half a billion pounds of materials imported from China used in the building of 100,000 U.S. homes could be contaminated with fumigants, unfiltered coal byproducts, foul-smelling sulfur compounds, and other unrefined ingredients.
Affected families have reported burning eyes, sinus headaches, and a feeling of heaviness in the chest in brand new homes built with Chinese drywall. A majority of the contaminated drywall materials are believed to have entered the U.S. in 2006, following the Gulf Coast hurricane series that wreaked havoc across the region amidst a national housing boom.

Toxic chemicals discovered in Chinese drywall
An exhaustive study conducted by the Florida Department of Health found that the Chinese drywall emits “volatile sulfur compounds” and strontium sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. The chemicals react to air and cause metal and electrical wiring to break down and ruin. Toxicologists have also reported other toxic compounds and gases in these homes, such as sulfuric acid and hydrogen sulfide, which are both potentially fatal.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), prolonged exposure to the compounds can result in breathing problems, chest pains, and even death (1).
