Two Louisiana Men Killed After Colliding With Parked SUV

April 18, 2012

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed and alcohol are two of the most common contributing factors in fatal motor-vehicle accidents in our country today. The two may have been a factor in a recent accident in Harvey, Louisiana, that claimed the lives of two men, according to WWLTV News.

A spokeswoman for the Louisiana State Police, trooper Melissa Matey, stated that a 54-year-old driver from Franklin, Louisiana, was driving east on LA 541 just before 4:00 a.m. with a 55-year-old local man as a passenger. Police say the driver drifted across the center median and collided with an SUV that was parked on the side of the road.

The SUV was unoccupied, but the two men in the vehicle responsible for the collision suffered massive trauma and died at the scene.

Preliminary investigations have led troopers to believe that the driver’s high rate of speed may have been a contributing cause to the accident. They added that they are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash as well.

The Louisiana Drunk Driving Injury Lawyers with Dudley DeBosier Injury Lawyers ask that all motorists work to keep our state’s highways safe by always buckling up, obeying the posted speed limits of the road you’re on, and most importantly, never getting behind the wheel of a automobile after consuming alcohol.

Mock Scenario Aims To Teach Teens The Dangers Of Drunk Driving

March 28, 2012

In an effort to shock teens into learning the dangers of drunk driving, Choudrant High School administrators set up a mock crash scene for their students to witness. According to The News Star, the Lincoln Parish branch of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s Safe Communities program sponsored the scenario.

Members of the student council acted in the scenario, which opens with a head-on collision of a Ford Mustang and a pickup truck. Next to the wreckage lies a student who is “dead,” while an “injured” student lies across the hood of the Mustang. In the dramatization, two students on their way to prom find the wreckage and call 911. Rescue crews and deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s and Fire Departments respond to the scene. They airlift the injured student away and cover the dead body, and the driver is arrested for DUI.

Officers and rescue crews answered all student questions after the activity. Safe Communities coordinator Jenny Crume stated, “The number one thing we wanted to get across was not to drink underage. The second thing is you wouldn’t let someone you care about get into a car with someone who is drunk behind the wheel.”

The Louisiana Drunk Driving Accident Lawyers with Dudley DeBosier Injury Lawyers know that teens may be pressured to drink and drive before prom. The firm hopes that teens can rise above the peer pressure and refrain from drinking.

Baton Rouge Prosecutor Wins Award For Efforts Against Drunk Drivers

March 7, 2012

A Baton Rouge, Louisiana, city prosecutor was recently given the title of Prosecutor of the Year at an awards ceremony sponsored by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for her efforts against drunk driving in the city. According to reports from WAFB 9 News, Prosecutor Lisa Freeman has helmed the battle against intoxicated drivers by establishing help programs and stringent rules for offenders during her more than 20 year tenure with the city.

Ms. Freeman helped to establish Baton Rouge’s Sobriety Court program for repeat DWI offenders. The program is a 12 month course designed to help repeat DWI offenders stay sober. Since the program’s inception just over a year ago, it has already had 11 successful graduates. Colleagues stated that fairness, accountability, and transparency in the prosecution of DWI cases have been a staple of Ms. Freeman’s time in the position.

Lt. Col. John LeBlanc, executive director of the Louisiana Highway Commission, added that Ms. Freeman’s work has saved many lives by taking drunk drivers off the road. In 2010, 43% of the 720 crash related deaths in Louisiana were attributed to alcohol consumption.

Three Pedestrians Killed Within Four Days In Baton Rouge

February 8, 2012

While walking to get where you need to go may be a green and healthy mode of transportation, it can be dangerous. Reports coming from WAFB 9 News say that three pedestrians have been hit in killed over the last several days in the greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area.

Last Thursday morning, a 2005 Toyota Camry struck a 90-year-old man as he tried to cross East Boulevard just before noon. He died at a local hospital the next day. Hours later, a 56-year-old man was hit and killed by a Dodge pickup truck as he tried to cross Greenwell Springs Road.

Drunk Driver Runs Over Two Cyclists In Baton Rouge

January 25, 2012

The man responsible for running over two cyclists, killing one, and critically injuring the other, is behind bars today in lieu of more than $90,000 in bail on charges of second offense DWI and vehicular homicide. According to reports from WAFB 9 News, the 28-year-old drunk driver responsible for causing the accident hit the men at around 8:45 PM near the intersection of Quail Run and Perkins Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Both cyclists had helmets on and lights mounted to their bikes, but it wasn’t enough to keep them safe when the man with a blood alcohol level of nearly four times the legal limit rammed them from behind. The cyclists fell to the asphalt where they were then run over by the vehicle. One cyclist, a 30-year-old father, was declared dead at the scene. The other cyclist was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition and faces numerous surgeries to repair the injuries to his legs and ankles.

Baton Rouge City Court records show he was booked for his first DWI on August 3, 2006, when his blood-alcohol level was .241, or more than three times the state’s legal driving limit.

Alcohol A Factor In Crash That Killed Louisiana Cyclist

December 14, 2011

State police say a 76-year-old man was killed while trying to cross a highway in Assumption Parish on his bicycle Monday evening. According to Houma Today, the accident occurred at around 6:00 PM at the intersection of La. 398 and La. 662 in Bayou L’Ourse.

Louisiana state troopers who investigated the crash stated that the cyclist was attempting to cross La. 398, when a 56-year-old man from Labadieville driving a Chevy pickup truck pulled onto the highway and struck him. The cyclist was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by paramedics to be treated for severe trauma he suffered in the accident, but was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

Troopers believe alcohol played a part in the crash, as the cyclist’s blood tests showed that he had alcohol in his system at the time of the accident. Tests from the driver of the pickup indicated he had no alcohol in his system.

A study by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene showed that alcohol was a factor in 20 percent of all cyclist fatalities in the city from 1996 to 2005.

The Louisiana DUI accident attorneys with Dudley Debosier Injury Lawyers would like to take this opportunity to remind cyclists not to drink and drive. If you have been involved in a cycling accident that was no fault of your own, contact an experienced attorney today for a free initial consultation of your case.

Wearing A Seat Belt Properly Is Key

December 7, 2011

The importance of wearing your seat belt properly was highlighted after a woman died in a three-vehicle accident in Lafourche, Louisiana. According WWLTV News, reports from state police show that the woman was buckled in, but was not wearing her shoulder harness correctly.

The accident happened at around 10:00 AM Tuesday morning at the intersection of LA 3087 and LA 182. The woman was the riding with her husband and they were stopped behind a truck at the light for the intersection. Suddenly, a vehicle approaching from behind did not slow for stopped traffic and rear-ended the victim’s vehicle. In turn, the victim rear-ended the truck in front of them.

Rescue crews told police they found the woman in the vehicle with the shoulder harness positioned under her arm instead of over, which may have contributed to the injuries she sustained. The woman was taken to the hospital, but did not survive.

Placing the shoulder harness under the arm or behind your back instead of across the chest could result in an injury-producing jar of the upper-body, or ejection from the vehicle, during the impact of a crash. Also, wearing a lap belt across the stomach instead of low across the hips allows collision forces to be applied to the soft tissue of the body, increasing the chance of internal injury.

The Louisiana Auto Accident Attorneys with Dudley Debosier encourage motorists to buckle up properly with the lap belt across the hips and shoulder harness across the chest. If you have been injured in an accident at no fault of your own, contact an experienced personal injury attorney today with questions regarding your case.

Sulphur High Students Learn The Dangers Of Drunk Driving

November 16, 2011

This past Tuesday, when Louisiana State Troopers went to Sulphur High School for a visit, they told students to put their beer goggles on and go for a drive. Sounds crazy doesn’t it? According to Channel 7 News, students didn’t need to drink a drop to learn the lessons of the dangers drunk driving poses.

State troopers put on a school campaign to teach the students what it is like to drive under the influence. They set up a driving course around the football field. Then, each student put on a pair of goggles that simulates the effects of alcohol and drove a golf cart through the course. One sophomore said, “I thought I could drive with them on, but I missed almost every cone. It’s hard to drink and drive.” Students were also asked to perform field sobriety tests with the goggles on.

Troopers hope the experience will show students the dangers of driving while under the influence and encourage them to choose an alternative method home if they have been drinking.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teens–with one in three of those crashes involving alcohol.

The Louisiana Drunk Driving Victim Attorneys with Dudley Debosier want to encourage you to prevent accidents before they happen. Should an accident occur, founding attorney, Steven Debosier, discusses what steps to take.

Parents Suing School For The Wrongful Death Of Their Son

October 5, 2011

Parents of a Nicholls State University student who was killed in an on-campus accident while intoxicated have just announced they are filing a lawsuit against the school.

Almost a year ago, around 2:30 on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the midst of homecoming, a 19-year-old college student was riding on a horse-drawn wagon hayride, when he stood up and fell over the front of the wagon. The driver did not see him fall and accidentally ran over him.

Paramedics transported the student to Thibodeaux Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. It was later discovered that the student’s blood alcohol level was three times above the legal limit, and that the anti-anxiety drug, Valium, was present in his system.

WWLTV News reports that the parents of the Nicholls State University student have filed suit against the University of Louisiana school system for the wrongful death of their son, claiming members of the young man’s fraternity pressured him into the intoxication and drug use that led to his death.

The Louisiana Wrongful Death Attorneys at Dudley Debosier would like to ask your opinion. Should the University and/or his peers be held responsible for the student’s behavior that cost him his life? Or should a 19-year-old adult, be accountable for his own actions? Tell us what you think on our Facebook wall.

Louisiana Hoping High Tension Cables Will Reduce Head-on Collisions

September 14, 2011

Head-on collisions are well known for being one of the most deadly types of automobile crashes a person can be involved in. What if we could stop some of those deaths from occurring? This is the hope of a new project being headed up by the Louisiana Department of Transportation.

According to WWLTV Eyewitness News, a 20-mile long system of high strength cables is being installed on Interstate 10, from Veterans Boulevard in Metairie to Highland Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Experts say that in the case of an accident where a vehicle could cross into oncoming lanes, the standard concrete barrier will cause the vehicle to ricochet off the wall and go back into the roadway. The new cable barriers will actually snag the vehicle during collision by entangling it in the cables.

The Louisiana State Police are applauding the project, as they have seen the system save lives in the past. Supt. Mike Edmonson stated, “ We’ve already seen in areas where it is there, they’ve stopped cars, they’ve stopped 18-wheelers.” In reference to a March 2008 incident in which a 6-year-old girl died in a drunk driving accident, the officer stated, “I certainly believe [this system] would’ve stopped that drunk driver that crossed the median in St. John Parrish.”

The Louisiana Auto Accident Attorneys with Dudley Debosier would like to encourage us all to do our part to make our roadways safer by slowing down, buckling up, and refraining from drinking and driving.
